Kambo

What is Kambo?

Kambo, also known as frog medicine, is the secretion of the Phyllomedusa bicolor (the giant monkey frog), a bright green tree frog native to the Amazon basin. It can be found in the Amazon jungles of South America in northern Brazil, eastern Peru, southeastern Colombia, and parts of Venezuela, Bolivia, and the Guianas.

Kambo is used for detoxifying the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual body, although it typically has a more targeted focus on the physical aspect. This medicine "resets" the body. It eliminates a large amount of toxins and strengthens the immune system, leading to an overall improvement in bodily function and restoring the vital strength and energy we possess when we are clean.

Scientific studies have described this medicine as a hidden treasure of bioactive peptides, short chains of amino acids that bind to human cell receptors, transforming into whatever the body needs, thus nourishing, complementing, and healing it.

An Italian scientist, Vittorio Erspamer of the University of Rome was the first person to analyse Kambo in a laboratory.

In 1986, he wrote that it contains a 'fantastic chemical cocktail with potential medical applications

Benefits of Kambo

Although it is mostly known for its effects on the physical body, all our bodies are interconnected, and we have been able to confirm that it is also helpful on a mental and emotional level.

· Physical: The biopetides present in Kambo have analgesic, antiviral, antibacterial, and anxiolytic effects. Increase in energy and the immune system.

· Mental: It brings clarity, helps us with stress, anxiety, and addictive behaviors.

· Emotional: At times, it can purge us and bring insights into unresolved situations from the past. By improving our overall bodily state, we can achieve greater balance in the endocrine system, regulating hormones and emotional states.

· Spiritual: It is a medicine historically used by the indigenous peoples of the Amazon for purification and strength. Used for the healing of diseases and for the cleansing of negative energies.

Compounds and peptides found in Kambo & it's benefits

Scientific research on Kambo has identified several biochemical components, primarily peptides, that exhibit various effects within the human body. These effects have potential applications in medical and pharmacological treatments.

Some of the possible benefits of these compounds include:

  • Mood Enhancement and Anxiety Reduction – Certain interactions may lower cortisol levels, the primary stress hormone, potentially improving mood and reducing anxiety.

  • Pain Relief – Some compounds possess anti-inflammatory properties that can alleviate pain caused by inflammation. Additionally, other components exhibit opioid-like effects and can cross the blood-brain barrier, providing pain-blocking effects directly in the brain.

  • Anti-Cancer Potential – Some compounds may inhibit blood vessel growth, a mechanism used in certain treatments to restrict tumor growth in targeted cancer therapies.

  • Addiction Treatment – Kambo peptides may help reset disrupted chemical pathways in the brain linked to addiction. Some peptides bind to opioid receptors, similar to opiates, which could help normalize brain function and reduce dependency without the need for opiate intake.

  • Lowered Blood Pressure – Many peptides have vasodilatory effects, meaning they expand blood vessels, allowing for better blood flow and contributing to reduced blood pressure. This effect can also cause light-headedness and dizziness, common sensations experienced when taking Kambo.

  • Heart Health Support – By widening blood vessels and improving circulation to the heart, Kambo compounds may have cardioprotective effects. Additionally, their impact on smooth muscle function may further benefit heart health.

  • Antimicrobial Properties – Several compounds exhibit antifungal and antibacterial effects. This aligns with the natural function of Kambo secretion in frogs, which helps protect their skin from fungal and bacterial infections, a significant threat to amphibians.

What Happens During a Kambo Ceremony?

A Kambo ceremony typically unfolds in seven key stages:

  1. Opening the Gateways – Small burns are made on the skin to create access points for the Kambo secretion to enter the body.

  2. Drinking Water – Participants consume a significant amount of water to aid in the detoxification process and facilitate the purge.

  3. Applying the Kambo – The Kambo secretion is placed onto the open gateways, allowing the bioactive compounds to enter the bloodstream.

  4. The Rush – A rapid physiological response occurs, often characterized by an increased heart rate, flushing, and a feeling of heat or pressure.

  5. The Purge – Nausea and vomiting help expel toxins, with some people also experiencing sweating, shaking, or bowel movements.

  6. The ‘Hump’ – After the most intense phase, participants may feel exhausted or temporarily weak before their energy begins to stabilize.

  7. The Calm After the Storm – As the effects subside, a sense of clarity, relaxation, and heightened awareness often follows.
